1954-2004
50th in 2004
# First of all..
Did you know that Tater Tots is 50 years old?
Can you imagine that they are so old? Oooops!
I do not really mean that!! I should say that
50 is ˝ a century and it is a long time.
And then, if you've been married for 50 years,
your 50th anniversary isn't called "golden"
for nothing :)
Tater Tots were invented fifty years ago by
two brothers from Oregon who founded Ore-Ida.
They created the tots to use leftover potato
pieces from their french fry business.
Last year, Americans ate 70 million pounds
of Tater Tots -- 14 percent of Ore-Ida's
frozen potato business.

# Now.. Next :
On March 25, 1954, Radio Corporation of
America began manufacturing color television sets
at its Bloomington, Ind., plant. It built 5,000
sets with 12-inch screens, known as the model
CT-100 color receiver.
They sold for $1,000 each, astronomical in
those days.
They didn't get much use that year, since color
telecasts were so rare.
But the American love affair with the tube
had taken a leap forward into the hues
of real life.
The effort to bring color to the home
screen was no easy feat. It occupied
scientists throughout the late 1940s
and early 1950s at RCA laboratories
in Princeton, N.J.
Their eventual concoction sounded
like something out of a science fiction
novel
-- the three-beam shadow mask tube.

Your Grandfather's Playboy
By RICHARD CORLISS
I remember when Playboy magazine
was forbidden fruit — Eve and her apple
in the Garden of Guilt. This was in the 50s,
when everything priapic was prohibited,
and when I was just grazing my teen years.
Like a boy sidling up to the pharmacy
counter to ask for, demand, his
first condom, the 13-year-old Child
Corliss sought out Playboy at distant
drug stores, put my 50 cents in the
palms of blind newsies.
Before Playboy, the only magazines
I had bought were comic books.
Hugh M. Hefner had connived to introduced me
both to the publishing industry
and to public stealth at a single ...stroke.

Anniversary of Brown v. Topeka, Kansas,
Board of Education, the landmark decision
by the United States Supreme Court
that desegregated public schools
throughout the country and launched
decades of policy changes intended to
improve equitable access to education
resources. The Supreme Court's decision
made an historic impact on the civil rights
struggle in America by striking down
laws and policies that were motivated
by prejudice and discrimination.

# 50th ANNIVERSARY OF ROCK 'n' ROLL
On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley recorded his
first record, "That's All Right," at the legendary
Sun Studio in Memphis…and rock 'n' roll took
off. To commemorate that event and its global
impact, Memphis will mark the 50th Anniversary
of Rock 'n' Roll in 2004 with a yearlong
celebration of rock music and the many streams
of music that converged in Memphis to create a
truly American sound known
throughout the world.
For the anniversary, Memphis will host a
series of major events throughout the year.
One of the highlights of the 50th Anniversary
celebration will occur on July 5 - 50 years to
the day when Elvis' "That's All Right" was recorded.
On July 5, 2004, Memphis will be the focal
point for a "Global Moment in Time" -
a moment at which radio stations across
the world will be encouraged to simultaneously
play "That's All Right." This will hopefully
mark the largest playing of a single song
at the same moment in history.

# Four Tops - 50th Anniversary Anthology
"The Tops are golden!" the CD cover blurb
screams, and now they are in the anniversary
sense as well:
50 years ago Obie Benson, Duke Fakir,
Lawrence Payton and iconic soul belter
Levi Stubbs sang together for the first
time at a weekend party in Detroit's
North End.
The foursome became a crack live act but
it wasn't until they signed with Motown
ten years later that their hard work
bore tanglible fruit.

# 50 Years Of Fun:
Dave McCoy, pioneer of Mammoth Mountain,
had been running a popular rope tow on
the north side of Mammoth since the
early forties, and had started skiing
in the region back in the 1930’s.
He knew Mammoth had the best snow and
terrain, and hundreds of hearty skiers
agreed.
But in 1953, when the Forest Service
took bids on a permit to develop a
European-style ski area there, no one
responded. Dave didn’t have the money,
and his detractors thought Mammoth was
too high, too snowy and too far away to
be successful.
